DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, Grade 940 with rare "Adjusted For Railroad Service 21 Jewels" marking on mvt and dial, 21J, 18S, gold-filled OF recase with attractive oncoming train image engraving to rear, Montgomery white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, two-tone checkerboard pattern gilt and nickel damascene, gilt screws and regulator assembly, s#985012. A very rare watch, the 18 size Grade 940 "Adjusted For Railroad Service 21 Jewels" watches is far harder to find than its 16 size Grade 992 equivalent. This 18 size version with two-tone checkerboard damascene was advertised in 1913/1914 by George H. Tucker of Chicago, Illinois who was an official watch inspector for numerous railroads. Like other known examples of this watch, the present movement has a secondary number (8932 in this instance) lightly scratched on the plate surface adjacent to the factory serial number. From the Estate of Michael "Skip" Marrone.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, good two-tone color, patch of surface abrasion between upper case screw and adjacent plate screw, few typical mild fine and micro-fine scratches elsewhere; dial with patched chip to inner portion of outer chapter left of 4 numeral, small patched edge chip at setting lever, fine scratch in outer chapter at 8:30; excellent hands; case shows little wear, slight compression of rear center evident as rippling of reflection to inner surface of lid, good overall engraving detail with mild reduction at rear shoulder; tight bow, crown shows light wear and some ridge break; thick glass crystal with few small fine scratches and minuscule edge nicks.
ESTIMATE: $1500 - $3000
